Never too old…
March 30, 2009
My daughter has been asking for quite a while to start piano lessons. We decided on a Yamaha Clavinova, a digital piano that has the sound and weighted keys feel of a regular piano, but costs less and doesn’t require tuning. My oldest son plays the cello, son #2 sings in choir and is in tap dance, and my daughter started piano lessons once we got the piano.
We talk as a society, and personally, in our family, about the importance of the arts. More research is surfacing more often about the value to the brain of learning to play music, as well as trying new things to keep making new neural pathways. So I decided to take the plunge and am taking piano lessons as well.
I am only on my first week so I’ll check back in a month or so, but for now, it is fabulous. I am playing about 30 minutes a day and my daughter plays better than I do, but I love it.
The reason I titled the post ‘never too old’ is a while back I posted on Facebook and Twitter asking whether I should take up the piano or not at my age. The unbridled enthusiasm I received back, as well as the scolding about even contemplating age (39) as an issue, was really helpful for me in deciding.
I am excited about learning this new endeavor both in terms of the piano itself, and in terms of how this will help me in other ways creatively.

Cool. Mariiana just got Rosetta Stone and she’s learning Spanish now…. I’m hoping to learn some myself.
