The Last Lecture
May 20, 2008
I recently saw the YouTube video of Randy Pausch’s The Last Lecture. (Background Randy Pausch is suffering from Pancreatic Cancer and was given 3-6 months to live about 9 months ago.) So did about six million other people. I then saw that he had been approached to
co-write a book about the content of the lecture, and the creating of the lecture. So I bought the book too. In fact, I bought three copies, one for each of my kids. I wrote an inscription on one and gave it to my oldest boy, he’s old enough to read it and ‘get it’ already. The other two will get a copy when they
are older.
In the lecture Randy tells a tale of "Reaching your childhood dreams" but it’s not really about that. It is about a way to live your life. Words don’t do it justice, and I won’t try. Do yourself a favor, invest less than 10 minutes in the synopsis video, then move on from there. I even bought the DVD.
It is inspiring in a way that is not over-the-top tug at your heartstrings, but in a way that can really help focus on getting the most out of your life. As a dad, there are so many things in that book that I want to impart to my kids, and it is done so well that I hope my kids really take this book to heart; I know I have.
